Silence. The band gets comfortable on stage while the audience sits expectantly. These are fresh faces to the circuit, just out of college and making their first impressions on a seasoned jazz crowd.

This gig is a double header, introducing the future jazz talent as seen by Jazz Yorkshire’s Futures Scheme. Now in its second year the Futures Scheme gives young musicians a leg up into the industry by providing funding which affords them time to compose, fine-tune their skills and get a band up and running.

Joe Montague catches up with the LCM graduate and rising jazz star

James Hamilton is certainly a rising star in the jazz world. The 26 year-old composer, bandleader and trumpeter has numerous strings to his, um, trumpet (?) and is committed to making his music work for him.

I met James in Casa Mia in Leeds’ esteemed graduate living quarters, Chapel Allerton, with ‘That’s Amore’ and other Italian classics waltzing out of the stereo James arrives. He is wearing jeans and a big blue Superman hoodie almost as thick as his Northern Irish accent.

Live Review Plaid and the Southbank Gamelan Players

Electronic music wizards Plaid come to the Howard Assembly Room to play alongside the Southbank Gamelan Players

This sold out concert was a collaboration between Plaid and the Southbank Gamelan Players, fusing traditional gamelan music with arrangements of more modern music, including ‘Actium’ by Aphex Twin, plus new works composed by Javanese composer Rahayu Sipanggah.

Plaid (Andy Turner and Ed Handley) are an electronic music duo who have worked with artists including Björk, Goldfrapp and The London Sinfonietta. They have released seven albums on Warp Records and a new album is currently being completed due for release later this year. We speak to the Latin music supremo about his Reggaeton Con Flow night, which takes place every month at Bar 4

How would you describe reggaeton music and where are its roots?
Reggaeton is a form of dance music which blends the Jamaican music influences of reggae and dancehall with those of Latin America, such as bomba and plena, as well as that of hip-hop. The music is also combined with rapping in Spanish. Reggaeton started in Panama where it was called “reggae en Espanol”; it was soon picked up by the Puerto Ricans where it gradually evolved into what is reggaeton today.
