Interview Will Saville, Riverside Court

This city liver tells us about his penchant for films, White Russians and Irish accents

What do you do for a living?
I work in sports development for the City of York council, or I will be in a week. It’s a new job. I’ve worked in sports development before, but not for York council.

How long have you lived in Leeds?
I was at university here for three years and then moved back home to where my parents live for a couple of years, and then I’ve moved back to Leeds again. I’ve been here for six months now. I always loved Leeds. It’s a young persons’ city, with students and young professionals, so…

News South Bank Leeds

We welcome news of more greenery in the city

With the economic crisis still looming, new city regeneration plans may seem unlikely. However, the current climate may at least represent an opportunity to take stock on the future direction of the city and to ensure that any new developments are focused on long-term sustainability.

With that in mind, Leeds City Council has announced plans for a huge regeneration project covering the southern edge of the city centre. The targeted zone, which spans a large area of Victoria Road, the Tetley Brewery, Crown Point Road, Sovereign Street and part of the River Aire, has the potential to be a fantastic…

News Trinity Leeds Project Restarts In August

Leeds is given a major boost as the huge shopping centre is put firmly back on track

It has been announced that the Trinity Leeds shopping centre has been given the go-ahead, with building due to start in August. The £350m project was scrapped back in May 2009 owing to recessional cutbacks-and is now the first of its kind to get back on its feet after the credit crunch. Employment in Leeds is set to benefit, as during its construction the centre will create 1,000 jobs - and after opening, that amount will treble to make 3,000 permanent retail vacancies.

The project will redevelop the Trinity Quarter around Briggate, Commercial Street, Albion Street and Boar Lane, measuring in…

Bex and the City Cake & Autumn

This fortnight, Bex is drooling over cake

Is there no end to the talent our city can produce? This fortnight, Leeds baker and former top chef David Bennett (trained under the watchful eye of Marco Pierre-White, no less), currently owner of Chapel Allerton’s delightful Sunshine Bakery, has been crowned Cupcake Champion of Britain. His Banana and Mango Cupcake concoction swung it for the judges and, being the sweet-toothed kind of gal that I am, the news really got me thinking about the good stuff. So I thought to myself, where are my favourite places in Leeds to devour some truly mouth-watering cake? There needs to be some…

Foundations Tower Works

Another iconic Holbeck landmark is set for regeneration

A couple of issues ago, you may remember we were praising some of Leeds’ spectacular contemporary architecture that has been nominated for the Royal Institute of British Architecture (RIBA) Yorkshire White Rose Awards. Unquestionably, Leeds is home to some of the most innovative architecture in all of Yorkshire, but what really makes these modern designs stand out is their juxtaposition with much older, more traditional landmarks. The significance of such historical sites should not be undervalued – they add so much character to Leeds’ skyline.

Erected in 1864, Tower Works is one such site – with its past representing the…

Interview Jay Budory, Clarence Dock

We meet a Burnley man who's recently left Headingley to set up home in Clarence Dock

How long have you lived at Clarence Dock and what do you like about living here?

I’ve lived here for about eight weeks now. I really like the quiet, relaxed feeling you get from the dock, at all times of day and night. I also love the upkeep of the place, never a piece of litter – quite the opposite to my old digs in Headingley! It makes me feel like a real grown-up, which is scary but good at the same time. Being a cockstride from work is also a huge bonus. I love rolling out of bed 10…
