Over on t’other side of the Atlantic, food and beer pairing events are all the rage, and slowly but surely we’re catching on. In 2009, North Bar presented a couple of beer and food events at The Cross Keys with American brewers Sierra Nevada and Flying Dog and now Lounge Bar & Grill are getting in on the act with themed beer events every month.
These events are sweeping the USA because in America quality beer is a pretty big deal. Small, so-called ‘craft’, breweries are making some interesting and exciting beers, and it makes sense that you show the beers at their best alongside tasty grub.
North Bar have recently announced that their next beer event will be a tasting for Dogfish Head, a brewery from Milton, Delaware, that’s been making all manner of ales since 1995 while sticking to their manta of “off-centred beer for off-centred people”. Their beers are, at the moment, pretty hard to find in the UK beyond a few choice retailers, but that is gradually changing.
The previous two events (with the aforementioned Sierra Nevada and Flying Dog) have been roaring successes, with five courses of great food from The Cross Keys’ chefs being specially designed to match these interesting, often experimental, beers. This event should be no different, with at least five beers expected to feature, alongside the possibility of one very special guest beer, which is being kept very well under wraps.
16 February, The Cross Keys, 107 Water Lane, LS11 5WD, 0113 243 3711, 7pm, £25. Tickets available from North Bar, 24 New Briggate, LS1 6NU, 0113 242 4540. www.dogfish.com
