Is there no end to the talent our city can produce? This fortnight, Leeds baker and former top chef David Bennett (trained under the watchful eye of Marco Pierre-White, no less), currently owner of Chapel Allerton’s delightful Sunshine Bakery, has been crowned Cupcake Champion of Britain. His Banana and Mango Cupcake concoction swung it for the judges and, being the sweet-toothed kind of gal that I am, the news really got me thinking about the good stuff. So I thought to myself, where are my favourite places in Leeds to devour some truly mouth-watering cake? There needs to be some kind of definitive list. And hey presto…
- Pickles and Potter, for their chocolate and raisin and biscuit bejewelled tiffin.
- Bagel Nash’s cranberry and white chocolate muffin; the heavenly white stuff is a too oft-neglected ingredient.
- Charlotte’s, with a divine Millionaire’s Shortbread.
- Wagamama, for the white chocolate and ginger cheesecake.
- Ciao Bella, and their chocolate chip bread and butter pudding.
So there you have it; I have been exposed for the avid chocolate champion that I am. Apologies if the collective evidence of my extreme cocoa weakness is a little too much for your stomach to take, but in my opinion, there are two kinds of people on this planet. The first kind opts for vanilla ice cream on the side of their chocolate cake, and the second (I of course fit into this camp) will always go with chocolate. If you are the former, I just don’t have time for you. Sorry.
Anyway, the month of August is drawing to a close and September officially brings with it the season of autumn. Thus, I have my sartorial eye on potential new-season garments that I can wriggle my dessert-scoffing self into. I’d like to insert a disclaimer here and state that I do not condone hunting, however I am very much drawn to the country squire look that is slowly permeating our high street right now. Ooh I do love a good list.
- H & M camel knitted cape with gold buttons, £49.99
- Topshop bottle green Jamie jeans, £40
- Office Enter the Wedge tan leather riding boot, £115
- H & M long brown horse print cardigan, £24.99
- River Island brown faux leather fur trim aviator jacket, £59.99
Now wouldn’t that make a cosy, ready-for-any-weather outfit? I’m off to bake some award-winning cakes to raise the funds to wear it.
