Bartender's Choice: Team Yorkshire, Boutique and Jake's Bar

It’s a slightly different Bartender’s Choice this week. We’re not just chatting to a single bartender, but we’re meeting a bartenders’ collective known as Team Yorkshire. And these boys mean business.
The group is made up of Rob Worsley from Boutique, James Coston from Jake’s Bar and Scott Tyrer also from Jake’s Bar, and they’re striving to do the city proud in the prestigious 42 Below World Cup cocktail competition. As the three individual winners of the regional heat in Leeds, they’ve joined forces as a dream ticket to show the rest of the country – and the world – what Leeds can do. The trio will represent Yorkshire at the next stage in London, and if they’re successful there in October, then they’ll be jetting off to New Zealand for the world final in 2011, where they’d get to take part in madcap pursuits like bartending while travelling on the back of a speedboat. Even better, they’ll have raised a few quid for charity in the process.
There are two ways that teams can make it to New Zealand: one team will be chosen by the judges for creating the best cocktail; the second winning team will make it through for creating the most impressive publicity campaign in the build-up to the event. Team Yorkshire are going all-out to win on both fronts. “We’ve had these T-shirts made and we’re gonna sell some more for charity,” Rob explains. “Basically the idea is we’re trying to raise £4,200 for charity, at least… but we’ll see what we can get to. We’re going to donate all profits to the Yorkshire Charities Group. And we’ll run a competition where people can buy a T-shirt and whoever sends in the best picture of them somewhere in the world wearing one of our T-shirts, wins a £50 bar tab at Boutique and at Jake’s, so £100 worth of bar tab. We’re going to do it on Facebook on our ‘42 Below Team Yorkshire’ page.”
To show Leeds Guide what they can do, Team Yorkshire rustle up a “fruity, girly” cocktail known as the 42 to 1, which was Rob’s winning entry at the Leeds heat of the competition. Tasty it is too. It’s on the sweeter side, fresh and fragrant, with a welcome squeeze of lemon juice to add a bit of zing. These chaps can certainly make a mean cocktail – but how will they agree on their joint entry in London? “It’s all about having something that’s workable at the bar as well as a competition drink,” says Rob, before James adds: “We’ve been messing around with some tea ideas, making our own tea bags and stuff. But we’ve got a few ideas and we’re just trying to keep it under wraps for now.”
