When you think of cocktails, you probably think of summer time. You’re lying by the pool in your bermuda shorts, soaking in the rays. You’ve got your cigar in one hand, drink in the other. A garishly coloured drink at that, with funny little wooden umbrellas and more straws than you know what to do with. But hang on a minute, it’s not the 1980s - things have moved on. And Leeds drinkers in particular are pretty demanding these days, with new venues needing to deliver a certain level of quality to bring in the hippest punters.
That’s where Distrikt comes in, a new basement bar that’s aiming to offer premium food and drink options alongside cutting-edge music, and is currently running early evening two-for-one cocktail offers. And as Rosita tells us, a cocktail can be the order of the day during these colder months. “Because it’s winter, spices like nutmeg and cinnamon are used in cuisine at this time of year, so it works quite well in this cocktail.” She’s talking us through the bar’s Vanilla Daiquiri, which also involves a warming splash of rum, some Italian liqueur and a squeeze of lime to freshen it all up.
Rosita goes on to tell us about the theme of quality that the bar is aiming for in its drinks menu. “We’ve produced a menu of very classic drinks with the emphasis on quality. So with the mojitos, as well as the standard mojito we’re also doing bespoke varieties focusing on the origins of the rum - for example we’ve got the Marley mojito, which uses rum from Jamaica.”
How did Rosita get into bartending? “Well, I worked in the Mint Club for a few years. I came to Leeds for uni and did marketing, which I finished two years ago. I’ve had a couple of other jobs in marketing and now I’ve come here.”
Where does she like to spend her nights off? “Mint Club, and Normans. I also like Back to Basics on a Saturday, and Dirty Disco. I live in Headingley and it’s all about nightlife in Leeds - it’s what people live for.”
