Rosie Bryan-Adams visits Call Lane's newest bar

Bar Review: Brooklyn Bar

This classy new bar, tucked away at the bottom of Call Lane, is perfect for a sophisticated cocktail on a late summer’s evening. Contending with the likes of Jake’s Bar, Oporto and Revolution, Brooklyn Bar oozes exclusivity and is sure to make a good impression on the Call Lane regulars.

Visiting on a Monday night, I found the bar to be quite quiet, but then it was early and (as you will have noticed) the students have gone back to ma and pa, so the whole of Call Lane was unusually sparsely populated.

Ordering a Long Island Iced Tea (£6.50) and a Cosmopolitan (£6.90), we were pleased to find that the barman was helpful and was quick to get our drinks. My cocktail had just a little too much ice but other than that was impressive, while my friend’s Cosmopolitan went down very well, even if it was missing that cindered orange peel.

Inside, the venue boasts dark leather seating in comfortable booths, which are perfect for large groups as well as couples. The bar is well-stocked and has all the spirits and syrups out to see. The drinks menu is extensive, offering everything from classic cocktails to American beers, but if you’re stuck for choice, the barman is more than happy to advise. Outside, the bar shares a cordoned off courtyard with Revolution – a great place to while away the hours with a cocktail during the summer months.

Downstairs, the basement toilets are decorated with commissioned graffiti depicting a scene from a Brooklyn subway station, which is certainly worth a look, and with the added rumble of real trains passing overhead, it begins to feel like you’ve stepped off the Brooklyn streets into the subway.

The toilets are pleasant, clean and well-lit, and there’s even some posh soap for that added bonus – none of that horrible detergent. Back up at the bar, the roped off stairs lead to a restaurant that will open later in the year and should make Brooklyn Bar even more exclusive and somewhere that begins to contend with establishments like Lounge.

Considering that Brooklyn Bar only opened recently and has launched at a quiet time of the year, this hidden gem was inviting, classy and sophisticated. We’ll certainly be returning on a Saturday night, when we’re sure it is bustling with thirsty drinkers looking for a touch or class in a bar that offers a respite from the hustle and bustle of the rest of the city.

Ive been a few times now, very stylish, love the array of sing along funk/soul/80’s music. Very good place, certainly another big player on the Call Lane map.
