The spirit of do-it-yourself and mend-and-make-do is alive and thriving in Leeds. Following the gloom of the recession, the widely forgotten crafts have experienced renewed interest from a generation that grew up with nary a knitting needle or sewing machine in sight.

Seizing on the current zeal for vintage styling and inspired recycling, a new venture in Leeds’ historic Exchange Quarter is offering a range of classes and groups for those passionate about improving their skills at all levels.

Fabrication, located at 11 Crown Court, is a social venture established by experienced costume designer and seamstress Dawn Wood. Conspiratorially ushering you down the secret alleyway leading to an 18th century building woven with a textile legacy, Fabrication promises to share all the secrets of the trade with the crafty types of Leeds.

The classes offered at Fabrication range from how to make a basic skirt to how to further your clothes-making business. There are beginners knitting and sewing workshops, advice on relining last season’s coat, ideas for how to revamp and recycle your wardrobe and even instruction on how to make an authentic Regency dress. And it’s not just clothing: there’s also workshops in how to make lotions and potions and pastie making.

Whether you barely know how to hold a crochet needle or you need help putting quick-release catches into your burlesque routine costumes, Fabrication is there with the space, the equipment and the know-how to help.

Founder and instructor Dawn Wood has been working as a designer and costume-maker since 1981, with an impressive array credits – including making the stage costumes for Bjork’s 2001 tour. In addition to running Fabrication, Dawn produces vintage and historical clothing under the Ages of Elegance line.

The handmade costume business is one of two in-house companies, along with Military Metalwork, which provides the knowledge and skills Fabrication’s unique classes.

With a range of classes and clubs to join, Fabrication is a must-see for anyone who is itching to put their creativity to good use.
