A Bartender's Life I Can I Can't

An insight into the life of Mojo cocktail man Lee Jones

A Bartender's Life: I Can I Can't

I feel bombarded by signs of things in cans recently. It seems to be the new fad; putting all your favourite alcohol and mixer combinations into one nice manageable aluminum package. As I’m stood waiting for my inevitably late bus, looking at this giant can advertisement I’m trying to work out exactly when (if I was to partake in such an indulgence) they’d expect me to enjoy this product?

Maybe on one of the UK’s many golden beaches, basking in warm rays, enjoying the view of glistening clear blue waters and cracking open a can of Malibu and coke? Errr no…. I’m more likely to be using the can as a weapon to throw at a tramp who is trying to steal my shoe outside Blackpool pleasure beach.

Ok, so maybe at home then? The aim for these premixed cans is apparently so you can enjoy them at home! That’s right, you are too lazy and stupid to dare try and create the complex concoction known as the gin and tonic by yourself. Just open your mouth, it’s ok, you deserve a break, don’t think about it, just crack open another can, it’s fine.

Let’s be honest, it’s going to be drunk on trains isn’t it? So far, that’s the only place I’ve seen it. Where’s the passion and creativity in drinks making in this? Nowhere, it’s just another hashed up attempt to make something old look new by putting it in new packaging. Products like these add further distance between the drinker and their drink, hindering awareness by cutting corners.

Say it with me!: I can, I can’t, I won’t.
