Lightly Grilled Stephanie Green, Doorstep Organics
The food and drinks quiz that's hungry for knowledge
Set up two and a half years ago, Doorstep Organics is a local, independent business that delivers organic fruit and vegetables to the front doors of their customers. But they don’t just do fruit and veg. A whole range of ethical and local produce is available, including bread, croissants, milk, honey, soup, olives and household products like Ecover. We caught up with owner Stephanie Green to find out more.
How did you set up Doorstep Organics and why?
I used to work for a shop in Leeds, running their delivery service for four or five years. While I was…
Lightly Grilled Louisa Henry, Opposite Cafe
Edwina Attlee talks to the founder of indie student hangout Opposite Cafe, who are about to launch a second spot in the Victoria Quarter
Lou Henry is leading a coffee revolution. Student favourite ‘Opposite’, by Leeds University, is growing up and going to work in the glittering surroundings of the Victoria Quarter. We meet Opposite’s owner and chief coffee taster Lou to find out what a serious business coffee really is.
Lou wrinkles her nose in distaste when talking about high street coffee chains; she describes the “huge, syrupy” vats that are so popular with the drinking public as “milkshakes”.
“We should be drinking much smaller cups, with two shots for a perfect taste,” she says. Lou, who is fanatical about her coffee,…
Lightly Grilled Kada Bendaha, Moorish
The food and drinks quiz that's hungry for knowledge
It was more than four years ago that Moorish first opened its doors. Sat right next to Hyde Park, it was originally a coffee shop selling herbal teas and shisha, but it has evolved to become a quality restaurant with a menu encompassing French, Arabic, Spanish, Mediterranean and North African cuisine. Recently it has launched a delivery service. We talked to manager and owner Kada Bendaha to find out more.
It’s all about quality food here, isn’t it?
Yeah, that’s the reason we started our delivery service. The whole idea is to try to introduce good food to good…
Lightly Grilled Caezar Cheung, D-Fusion
The food and drinks quiz that's hungry for knowledge
Sat next door to the Grand Theatre on the vibrant Upper Briggate, D-Fusion is a restaurant, bar, karaoke bar and club. We spoke to the bar’s owner Caezar Cheung to find out what’s going on at his versatile venue.
When was D-Fusion first opened?
It’s been open for almost four years now. Like we say on the window “Eat. Drink. Sing. Dance.” That’s what people can find her. Bar, restaurant, karaoke and a nightclub. We also have a party room which can be hired in advance.
What do people hire the rooms for?
We get lots of bookings…
Lightly Grilled Citrus
The food and drinks quiz that's hungry for knowledge
Sitting right in the middle of Headingley’s vibrant town centre, Citrus has been a resident of the venue-packed North Lane for years. From its humble cafe beginnings, it has expanded outwards and upwards. Surrounded on all sides by competitors, we spoke to the new managers, Ronnie Cavanagh and Emanuele Dini, to see what splits Citrus apart from the pack.
How did Citrus start out?
Emanuele: Citrus has always been here in Headingley, it used to be a smaller cafe right next door, with a kitchen upstairs, and then it moved over here to the bigger location. It’s been here…
Lightly Grilled Geoff Millington
The food and drinks quiz that's hungry for knowledge
Geoff Millington is the owner of Millies - a long-term fixture in Kirkgate Market and York - which has recently moved into their third, flashier store on Vicar Lane. We talked to him about this new delectable delicatessen and health store, Millies Fresh and Organic.
Tell us a little bit about Millies
We’ve got two healthfood stores already, one in York and one in Leeds, next to the market. They’re both completely different to Millies - one specialises in nuts and dried food, the other one in supplements. We wanted to bring together all fresh foods, deli foods, everything…
Lightly Grilled Martin Pickles
The food and drinks quiz that's hungry for knowledge
The Flying Pizza is the thriving, bustling Italian restaurant on the main street in Roundhay. It’s been in business for 35 years, with Martin Pickles at the helm for the last eight. After their recent refurb (don’t worry, you’ll still recognise the place) he tells us what’s so special about the place.
How long has Flying Pizza been open for?
This is its 35th year. We opened our doors for the first time in 1974 and we’ve only had three owners, which shows the longevity of the business. I’ve owned it for eight years, together with two partners, who…
Lightly Grilled Matt & Rich, The Shed
The food and drinks quiz that's hungry for knowledge
The Shed, nestled in one of the city’s many railway arches and boasting an impressive array of cocktails, world beers and rare whiskies, opened in early December. Managers Matt and Rich have created a city centre bar full of character, which is rapidly becoming a favourite for lovers of rock and indie music.
What made you decide to open a new city centre bar?
Matt: My family own two bars in Horsforth, and Rich is a manager at one of those bars. We’ve been best mates since school, so we decided to do something together. What we’re doing is…
Lightly Grilled Caroline Mason
The food and drinks quiz that's hungry for knowledge
Just when we thought Headingley had everything, Lilliputs arrived. If you fancy a quick nibble, a lunchtime filler or a platter between friends, then Lilliputs is the place. Since opening it’s doors in September, owner Caroline Mason has turned a Spanish snack into a business venture.
What is Lilliputs?
Lilliputs is a great and affordable way to try and sample a variety of fillings in one meal. We sell montaditos, which to put it simply, are little baguettes available in white or brown bread loaded with a choice of 50 different fillings.
Tell me how you started?
I…
Lightly Grilled Angelo Plazzi, Bibi's
The food and drink quiz that's hungry for knowledge
Italian restaurant Bibi’s has been a feature on Leeds’ culinary map for over 30 years, providing a wide range of Italian and international food in stylish surroundings and served with a smile. Its success has recently been confirmed by a victory in the Best Italian category at the Leeds Restaurant Awards 2008. Manager Angelo Plazzi explains Bibi’s success, its present incarnation as Bibi’s Italianissmo, and future plans.
Bibi’s is a bit of an institution, what’s its history /
We started in Mill Hill in 1974 and right from the beginning it was fantastic, so busy. We were serving traditional…
