Leeds United LUFC 2010/11 Season Review

'Leeds United On This Day' author Joe Mewis looks back over Leeds United's first season back in the Championishp

At the start of the season we said in this column that we’d take a nice comfortable mid-table finish, a season of consolidation and getting to grips with the Championship before a promotion charge next year. This would also bring the added bonus of not having the stressful cloud of promotion/play-offs/relegation envelop us Leeds fans as it does every season and we might all live longer as a result.

That’s not quite how it panned out however, as the past season has contained its usual share of ups and downs with United narrowly missing out on…

Leeds United Leading The Chasing Pack

Three defeats in four games leave Leeds in league limbo

The rhetoric surrounding Leeds United’s defeat last night would suggest it wasn’t a great display of the endeavour expected by the United faithful. Similar grumbles seemed to emanate around West Yorkshire after the surprise loss to Sheffield United and the unsuccessful trip to Millwall’s New Den.

An away trip to Derby was a chance to curb the apparent loss of form, but Nigel Clough’s men bounced back from a goal down to do the double on United and send them into playoff purgatory. After an hour, Gradel had smashed Leeds into the lead but just five minutes later the tables…

Leeds United Doncaster and Preston

Another two games in four days, another seven goals: Leeds consolidate their playoff credentials with style and guts

On paper both Doncaster and Preston (17th and 24th respectively) are teams that any club in the top half of the table would want to beat. At this stage of the season however, with almost every Championship club still in the market for something – whether that be safety or higher placed ambitions – that would be a naive attitude to adopt.

For 44 minutes against Doncaster on Saturday, Leeds United looked like an unstoppable attacking force. How only one goal was wrestled free of the opposition no-one will ever know, such was the voracity of Leeds’ desire.

How Howson…

Leeds United Welsh Woe

Regular Championship football news from Elland Road

Leeds’ 7-match unbeaten run came to an emphatic end in South Wales on Saturday, when a vibrant Swansea side beat United 3-0 in a match where the visitor’s shortcomings were painfully exposed.

With Bradley Johnson suspended following his two yellow cards against Barnsley, Simon Grayson was forced into a change of personnel and formation, bringing in Davide Somma and switching to a 4-4-2 formation. Herein lied the problem, as the Leeds midfield was overrun from the off, as Kilkenny and Howson, outnumbered in the middle of the park, failed to stamp their authority on the game which in turn gave…

Leeds United Score Draws Galore at Elland Road

Two games in four days have seen a whopping 10 goals at Elland Road as visits from local rivals Barnsley and promotion rivals Norwich produced markedly different games

Paul Lambert’s Norwich fought tooth and nail with Leeds to escape League One last season and a healthy rivalry has emerged as the teams push the best of the Championship to get above those precious dotted lines in the league table. Each team has “built not bought” as Steve Claridge eloquently put it and, along with Swansea City and Millwall, have proved that recent additions from the third tier of English football can punch way above mediocrity in the Championship.

On Saturday both teams leapt out of the docks with verve and industry, with Leeds delighting the home crowd by…

Leeds United Transfer Deadline Day – A Quiet Day at Elland Road

The latest comings and goings from Elland Road

Transfer deadline day is great. Loads of excitement, rumour, ridiculous my-grilfriend’s-mum’s-best-mate-works-with-the-cousin-of-Paul-Scholes and she’s heard he’s off to Shrewsbury conjecture and, sometimes, some transfers.

The big news for the day is the movement of a certain two strikers. Fernando Torres off to Chelsea for some £50m, with Andy Carroll going to Liverpool from Newcastle for £35m (!) to replace him.

Mainly, Leeds United seem to be clearing out the deadwood, with doomed Argentine left back Fede Bessone getting sent off to Charlton on loan after a less than convincing eight games at Elland Road, Jason Crowe (best known for his…

Leeds United Arsenal Stars Treat Leeds To A Stylish FA Cup Exit

Regular Championship football news from Elland Road

The task facing Simon Grayson’s men last night was always one of the well-oiled underdog, expectant fans hoping only for a display of passion and the chance to celebrate a goal against superior opposition, in a timely and well deserved distraction to the marathon of the league championship.

In the end Leeds’ big FA Cup evening was just that and the seeds of hope that something greater might be achieved were twice quelled, firstly when Arsenal took an early lead to quash the hopes of the packed out Elland Road stadium and the neutral TV viewer, and finally when they…

Leeds United F-A-B! Theo to the rescue!

Regular Championship football news from Elland Road

Leeds United hit the back pages of the papers last weekend as a white army descended on North London for a first visit to the glass and concrete jungle that is the Emirates Stadium.

12 months after disposing of United’s old rivals from the dark side of the Pennines, Simon Grayson’s charges had the chance to dump Arsenal out of the FA Cup Third Round for the first time in Arsene Wenger’s reign.

Just has he did in last year’s cup run Grayson fielded a full-strength team, tweaking the formation slightly to move Snodgrass into a more central role behind…

Leeds United Christmas Consolidation for Grayson’s Charges

Regular Championship football news from Elland Road

Boxing Day Fox Hunt
The snow was still falling in Leeds on Christmas Eve, albeit very gently, and Leeds United sat at a lofty second in the Championship table. Having performed a remarkable comeback at Turf Moor and showing QPR how to play football in front of a bumper Elland   Road crowd, it felt like Christmas had come early for Leeds United fans. So, it’s hard not to be disappointed with the three score draws over the festive period, topped off this week with a first defeat in 12 to Cardiff, the team who last beat the Whites…

Leeds United Snowed in and turfed out

Regular Championship football news from Elland Road

United 2 Palace 1

As last Saturday’s fixture list succumbed to the snow that was clogging up the country’s roads and railways, a small army descended on Elland Road to keep the weather at bay. ‘Operation Buckingham’ (see what they did there?!) was in full swing to ensure that the home game against Crystal Palace kicked off at 3pm and United fans will be glad that it did.

Unable to capitalise on a strong start - Jonny Howson sweeping a through ball into the net after 5 minutes only to be judged offside - Leeds went a goal down just…
